On July 10th 2024, Professor Giovanni Andrea Cornia passed away. He was a passionate development economist and a formidable organizer of institutions devoted to the research, education, and practice in the field of development, such as UNICEF, the UNU-WIDER, and the University of Florence. His passing represents a significant loss for the many who had the privilege of knowing him as a professor, colleague, mentor or friend.
Over 50 years of research, policy engagement, and teaching, Andrea contributed innovative ideas, analyses, and programs in the social and economic development field, with a primary focus on fighting poverty and inequality and promoting equitable and fair development. His work and teaching have significantly shaped, influenced, and inspired generations of students, economists, and development practitioners worldwide.
To commemorate his firm dedication to the disadvantaged, solid knowledge, immense scientific curiosity, and his natural inclination to lead, to teach, and to learn from others, we are organising a commemorative conference that will gather scholars and development practitioners who worked with Andrea, and which will be concerned with one of favorite Andrea’s topics – inequality and its various dimensions.
